Consumer spending outpaces income growth

August spending rose 0.9% while personal income rose 0.2%, creating a gap beneath the headline demand figures.

What changed

BEA reported a 0.9% monthly increase in personal consumption expenditures in August, compared with 0.2% growth in personal income. The PCE price index rose 0.3% that month. Real disposable income remained flat, while real consumer spending increased 0.6%.

Why it matters

Consumers continued to spend, but purchasing-power growth did not keep pace. SiteThesis interprets that gap as a demand durability risk, particularly for discretionary businesses. National spending strength can coexist with pressure on the customers a specific location needs.
